Driven by year-end deadlines — and with the added effect of headlines hitting over the holidays — several agencies released data on the eve of the new year:
- On New Year's Eve, the NYC Department of Education released new data on gifted and talented programs, showing that the vast majority of students in those classes are white, even though whites make up only one-third of the elementary school population. The law mandating the release set a deadline of Dec. 31. (Data in Excel format.)
- The NYPD released incident-level data on the top seven felony crimes for the last year (and then some) on Dec. 30. The nearly 77,000 records include information on each incident's time and place — within about a block. If you use the data, be sure to read the footnotes, which include the fact that all rapes are geo-located to the precinct's station house and all crimes in the jurisdiction of the Department of Correction are placed on Riker's Island.
- The city of Chicago released 3,000 emails on New Year's Eve that show communications in the office of Mayor Rahm Emanuel in response to the police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. (Available in PDF from WTTW public television.)
- The latest batch of emails from Hillary Clinton's personal server were released by the U.S. State Department, according to a schedule set by court order.
