Chris Kreussling blogs as Flatbush Gardener and is contributor to the Wednesday evening Twitter event #WildflowerHourNYC, where people post photos of local wildflowers that they've spotted.
His favorite trees will start to bloom in the next few weeks. The amelanchier also goes by a slew of other names, including serviceberry, juneberry and shadbush.
"It's the first woody plant to bloom in my garden. The winter buds burst into distinctive furry flower buds," he said. "When the flowers are fully open you can clearly see the five fold symmetry of rose relatives."
