Rescue workers had to cut through three layers of glass using a diamond saw from inside the 68th floor of One World Trade Center to rescue two window washers stuck in malfunctioning scaffold dangling from the building.
Port Authority and FDNY officials are still investigating the incident, but preliminary results showed the cables that comprise the pulley device on the scaffolding didn't lower at the same time, causing the basket the men were stationed in to tilt nearly vertical.
"At no time were the people on the scaffolds unsecure, they were secured by their own belts and by the ropes from the roof," FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.
The fire department was notified about the scaffold at 12:40 p.m. and the workers were rescued sometime after 2 p.m.
Nigro said the workers had mild hypothermia after their ordeal outside the 68th floor of the nation's tallest building.
An FDNY spokesman wouldn't identify the name of the window washing company but said the department hadn't had problems with the company in the past.
