We're going to end the show on a lighter and more exuberant note with the question, what is the most exuberant you have ever felt because of a sporting event? 212-433-WNYC, 212-433-9692. What is the most exuberant you have ever felt because of a sporting event? 212-433-9692.

You know why I'm asking this, right? In light of the New York Knicks incredible 11-game winning streak and that huge Eastern Conference Finals win over the Cleveland Cavaliers last night by 37 points. Knicks fans all over New York are feeling something pretty rare. Collective joy, excitement, pride, maybe even disbelief, but definitely exuberance because yes, despite the odds, the Knicks are finally going to the NBA Finals, and it's the first time since 1999.

There is another one that I don't want to let go unremarked on, Arsenal. I know there are some Arsenal fans out there. Arsenal just won the Premier League over there across the pond for the first time in 22 years. Knicks fans, Arsenal fans, sure, but you can feel this exuberance as a participant in sports, too. Even low-level sports like, I don't know, your company softball team or whatever it might be.

For the last few minutes of the show, we are inviting sports moments that gave you the most exuberance that you've ever felt with respect to sports. 212-433-WNYC. Was it when the Mets won the World Series in 1986 after many, many years, or the Yankees won the World Series in 1996 after many, many years? Maybe it was something that had even more meaning outside of sports, like Mike Piazza's home run for the Mets just a couple of weeks after 9/11. It was a game-winning home run, one of those moments that felt bigger than sports and lifted a lot of the city for a night. I don't know that that's the same exuberance.

Maybe it was Billie Jean King beating Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes and making history far beyond tennis when this aging male tennis player said, "Even the best in the world of the women couldn't beat me," and of course she did. 212-433-WNYC. For our last few minutes, we're going to hear your most exuberant sports moments as a fan or a participant. Maybe it was this weekend if you root for the Knicks or the Arsenal. 212-433-WNYC call or text.

 [music]

Brian Lehrer: Brian Lehrer on WNYC. Now to your most exuberant sports moments as a participant or a spectator. As a New Yorker, I want to just give my respect to people from Boston, though I root against them every day. Listener writes, "I can still feel in my cells the feeling when the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. I was so nervous. I didn't go to the bar to watch with my friends. I stayed home alone, expecting to cry sad tears, but no." That, of course, was the first time for the Red Sox since 1918. Tom in Lakewood has a personal one. Tom, you're on WNYC. Thanks for calling in.

Tom: Hey, Brian. My personal experience was, I was a player-coach and had a lot of experience personally. I was coaching a women's soccer league in the summer. Two undefeated teams met for the championship, went to double overtime, and we had two eighth-graders who were actually starting for the team, and one of them scored two goals in overtime to win the league title. Not bad.

Brian Lehrer: It's something when you know the people, right?

 Tom: Oh, yes.

Brian Lehrer: Mine certainly, very high on my list would be the time that my own kid pitched a no-hitter in high school ball. When it's yours, when it's your kid, when it's the women you were coaching, it's so special, right?

Tom: Yes. I was the token guy on a great team.

Brian Lehrer: [laughs] Thank you for your call. Oh, two different people are calling in with this one. I'm going to take Mike in Astoria to represent. Hi, Mike.

Mike: Hi. Hi, Brian. How are you?

Brian Lehrer: Good. Your most exuberant sports moment?

Mike: The 1980 men's Olympic hockey team victory over Russia. I was 17, and that was just a phenomenal, phenomenal event.

Brian Lehrer: Can you describe the feeling? Can you put it into words?

Mike: Well, what I remember was that it was tape delayed, so the game had been played, but they put it on TV, I think around nine o'clock at night. My father and I sat down to watch the game, and we put everything aside. We were all excited, and the whole city, the whole country, was on edge. My mother walks into the room and says, "Oh, I know this, I know the score. It's already been played." She's just about to say it, and she catches herself, and she lets us watch the game.

Brian Lehrer: Spoiler alert. Did it mean something to you in Cold War terms, not just in sports terms?

Mike: Well, I was 17, so I wasn't really that aware of world politics so intensely. It just meant that miracles can happen.

Brian Lehrer: Because they were certainly the underdog for that kind of miracles. I think that's what they called the '86 Mets, or was it the '69 World Championship Mets? The Miracle Mets. Karen in Manhattan, you're on WNYC. You have a good one.

Karen: Hi. Thank you for taking my call. I remember 1999, my daughter was in high school playing soccer, and we went to the World Cup in New Jersey. I don't even remember the team that the Americans played, but 95,000 people came to see that game. 95,000 people came to a women's soccer game. I was so emotionally overwhelmed by that fact. It was the Mia Hamm era.

Brian Lehrer: Yes. Thank you very much. Boy, we have some Mets ones coming in. I'm not surprised because it's been so rare. Here's one in a text that says, "I was at Queens College in 1969 when the Hapless Mets won the World Series. There were televisions in every hallway all over campus, with everyone keeping track of the scores. It was exuberant." That leads us to Art in the East Village. Art, you're at WNYC. Hi there.

Art: Hello there. Good morning, Brian. This is bringing so much excitement to me. Where the Underdog Mets in '86 and Game 6, they were a hair's breadth away from being eliminated. The World Series was going to be in Boston's hands, and we were all going nuts. I was watching it on TV with some dear friends. One of them took the opposite side. He said, "Oh, the Mets have lost it. This is it. They're doing it again." He said, like, "I'll take you out to dinner if the Mets win." Well, that bottom of the inning where they came back and tied it up. Then the ball went under Buckner's legs, man, and I had my lucky socks on that day.

Brian Lehrer: That was one of the ones where I heard it outside my apartment building window, people cheering that one like the Queens College scene that the 1969 writer referenced. I'm going to take one more in our last 15 seconds because we have to finish on the Knicks. David in Manhattan, you're on WNYC, but you've got to do it in 15 seconds. Hi.

David: Great. Thank you, Brian. I'm not a huge sports fan generally, but I am a sucker for basketball. My favorite moment was the 1973 Knicks championship. It's hard to say whether that was better than them beating the Celtics, but it's a toss-up.

Brian Lehrer: David in Manhattan finishes on the Knicks note with your most exuberant sports moments.
