On advice offered on your program, I started using a sleep mask. It worked wonders. I fall asleep faster, stay asleep throughout the night more often, and fall back to sleep quickly when I do wake.

:

That even on days I don't have to be up, the number of hours I sleep tends to be more or less the same.

:

See first comment: use of sleep mask, which improved my sleep immeasurably.

It is disconcerting to discover that most people are getting more sleep than me.

I'm wondering if this is due to the tracking mechanism. I have the Jawbone UP which records awake time in the middle of the night. If someone is not using a device, they would just record their "go to sleep" and "wakeup" times which would skew the data considerably.

I learned that I'm not quite getting as much sleep as I thought I was; however, most days I'm doing about average and some way above. I'd like to see another individual's pattern to see if it's as sporadic as mine.

:

No, but I probably should. Truthfully, the idea of HAVING to sleep to clock it in this project made me anxious, which made it harder to sleep.

I am surprised that my number of hours a sleep is above the average, despite the fact that I have twin toddlers sleeping in the same room. I also feel very sleeping and tired, so I cannot imagine how an average New Yorker feels if they sleep less than me.

:

I had my fitbit for a while and in the beginning was tracking my sleep regularly and then stopped. As a result of this study I am again paying more attention to fitbit and trying to sleep more.

that i'm older than most of the participants and sleep less than most of the participants.

i'm more aware of "how long it takes to fall asleep" (i guess i'm pretty quick) and how much i'm up during the night (i guess not that much)

which leads to the question does it make a difference if i sleep less but more effectively?

I have learned that my sleep is pretty consistent. There are weeks, however, when I sleep less due to restlessness or frequently waking up. I would love to track those types of nights, more than just the time awake, and compare it to what is going on during my waking hours.
