Sir James Calvert Spence was a pioneer in the field of social pediatrics and a witty opponent of male circumcision.
James Calvert Spence (19 March 1892 - 26 May 1954) was decorated for his service in Egypt and the Western Front during WWI. While in the Royal Victoria Infirmary and other institutions in Newcastle he developed the field of social pediatrics. Spence's classic studies on children showed strong correlations between socioeconomic status and health, and he was a strong advocate for breastfeeding and deeper involvement by parents in medical visits. He was a founding member of the British Pediatric Association.
