#4897, Songs of the Wind
Hear work with the wind as its inspiration in music by Brooklyn-based composer Christopher Cerrone, sound designer Ryan Rumery, and vocalist, composer, and choreographer Meredith Monk.
There’s music for treble voices of the Lorelei Ensemble, conducted by Beth Willer, and electronics from Brooklyn-based composer Christopher Cerrone, which uses text drawn from the Beaufort Wind Force Scale (a measure of wind speed, originally as it related to observed sea conditions) created by Francis Beaufort in 1805. Some of the more vivid descriptions include:
Step 7 “Sea heaps up, white foam from breaking waves blowing in streaks with the wind.
Small trees in motion, resistance felt walking in the wind.”Step 11 “Exceptionally high waves, concealing ships. Sea covered with patches of foam. Edges of wave crests blown into froth. (Poor visibility.) Widespread destruction.”
Interspersed among the 13 sung movements of the escalating wind force steps are interludes featuring texts taken from the writings of Herman Melville, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Anne Carson, and the King James Bible. "Each of these comments on the state of weather at a particular point in time, serving as a pause and a moment to reflect" and perhaps ... "consider our era of accelerating climate change" (program notes, Bandcamp.)
Also, there’s music by composer, vocalist, choreographer, filmmaker, and living legend Meredith Monk and Tony Award-Winning sound designer Ryan Rumery. – Caryn Havlik
