Ancient Sounds Reborn

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
When many people think of Jewish culture, they call to mind the Yiddish-speaking world of Eastern Europe. But for much of their history, Jews resided around the Mediterranean—in Rome before Christianity and in the Iberian peninsula as early as the 10th century. Today on Soundcheck, baritone and guitarist Gerard Edery joins us to shed some light on the Sephardic song, Jewish songs dating to the Spanish Diaspora. He'll also preview next week's Musicians for Harmony annual benefit concert commemorating September 11 at Merkin Concert Hall. Also on the show: Academy-award winner Allan Miller is presenting three documentary films about Western classical musicians and Chinese artists who find common language through music this week at Symphony Space. He joins us with a preview.
