#4387: New Music, Old Instruments and Bardcore

New Sounds | Aug 28, 2022

Who doesn’t love a lute, or a cittern, or a vielle? Hear new music made on old instruments, along with some “Bardcore” - 20th and 21st Century contemporary pop music re-worked on early and medieval instruments.

Listen to flutes and recorders, lutes, psaltery, cittern, vielles (medieval fiddle) and percussion in music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, lutenist Joz van Wissem, and Red Byrd in a work by Led Zeppelin bass player, John Paul Jones. Plus, music arranged by German producer Cornelius Link and Algal the Bard from the 2020 Youtube thing called “Bardcore.” Think of it as music out of the time of one plague, played in the time of a very different plague by folks with a lot of time on their hands.

German producer (and web developer) Cornelius Link is one of the main accounts posting Bardcore covers, and in an interview with Vice says, that he’s “always been enthusiastic about medieval music,” and that he “thought this could be a fun idea.” Indeed. Listen to his arrangement of the Foster the People song, “Pumped Up Kicks” – which might fail to take into account the longbow versus gun. There’s another “Pumped Up Kicks” arrangement by Hildegard von Blingin’ who is a “key player in the Bardcore movement,” (The Awesomer), whose videos happen to be in Olde English. Which does take into account bow instead of gun:

Also, hear Metallica and System of a Down as arranged by another of the players in the Bardcore movement, Algal the Bard, for lute, cittern, flute, and effects pad.

Then, listen to new original music on medieval instruments by lutenist Jozef van Wissem, who has done film scores for and with Jim Jarmusch. Also, hear work from Ryuichi Sakamoto and a medieval ensemble, Danceries. Then, dive into some neo-pagan Nordic folk music from Wardruna, along with music from Australian duo Dead Can Dance. And more.
