#4488, Mostly Keys and Sax

New Sounds | May 25, 2022

Hear music for mostly sax and keyboards by JJJJJerome Ellis and Lea Bertucci, along with new music from Ken Field in collaboration with Erdem Helvacioglu. Plus, music by Colin Stetson.

Composer, poet, and performer JJJJJerome Ellis has been doing a series of “Sound Baths" – installations built layers of keyboards and sax, and intended as a sonic healing. Listen to the latest in this series of Ellis’ “perpetual music” a work, “Fountain #3.” Then, sound artist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Lea Bertucci deploys bass clarinet, alto sax, manipulated tape, organ, a venu wooden flute, and field recording on her latest record, A Visible Length of Light. Hear one of her tracks which shimmers with life and hope, “On Opposite Sides of Sleep,” and is the product of “real-time reactions to, and reflections upon, the instability of the year 2020,” for sax and keys. (Lea Bertucci’s Bandcamp)

There’s also music made by a saxophone choir, created by sax player Ken Field (Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, Sesame Street composer), in collaboration with Turkish-American composer and producer Erdem Helvacioglu. Listen as looped and layered saxophones create an “ever-shifting dawn chorus” of "fluttering drones and angular polyphonies" on the track, "Transcendental" (Neuma Records.) Plus, hear music from Montreal-based saxophonist Colin Stetson (Arcade Fire, David Byrne, Tom Waits), for several well-placed microphones and no looping devices whatsoever.

Also, from the late 1960’s, listen to vintage music for reed organ by Christopher Hobbs with his friends Gavin Bryars and John White. And, Terry Riley uses organ, sax, and tape delay on "Poppy Nogood And The Phantom Band All Night Flight, Vol. 1." - Caryn Havlik
