#4498, Music for Piano

New Sounds | May 20, 2021

Piano is up front, sometimes with other instruments or electronics for this New Sounds. There’s music by Massachusetts-based Thomas Oboe Lee, London-based multi-instrumentalist Lucinda Chua, and composer and improviser Erika Dohi (of RighteousGIRLS) for partially prepared piano.

Listen to piano-forward music by Chinese-American composer Thomas Oboe Lee, from his solo piano work "Via Crucis" based on Franz Liszt’s Via Crucis. Listen to two of these pieces for the Fourteen Stations of the Cross, as played by Jenny Lin. Also, sample music by the Anglo-Malaysian cellist and singer Lucinda Chua from her latest, Antidotes 2. Then, hear spare piano music by Brooklyn-based Colombian composer and filmmaker Julian de la Chica, from a series of works, “Voyeuristic Images, Op. 10” for his film, Agatha.

There’s music for partially prepared piano by Japanese-American composer Erika Dohi, and her latest record, I, Castorpollux, which explores the nature of duality. Hear an electroacoustic duet by Brooklyn-based Christopher Cerrone for piano and percussion and found sound from Italy, featuring Timo Andres and percussionist, Ian David Rosenbaum. Plus, Jon Hopkins covers a Thom Yorke song, and Bing and Ruth covers Icelandic pianist, keyboardist, composer Gabriel Olafs. - Caryn Havlik
