#5032, From NSL: Meredith Monk and Alarm Will Sound, From Merkin Hall, Part 2
Composer, singer, director/choreographer and creator of new opera, music-theater works, films and installations, Meredith Monk is a pioneer in what is now called “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance.” Meredith Monk and members of her acclaimed Vocal Ensemble joined forces with new music supergroup Alarm Will Sound for a night of works spanning her singular career in late May of 2025. Listen to her work, Indra’s Net, in a suite arranged for the new music band Alarm Will Sound.
Celebrating her 60th Season of performing and creating, Meredith Monk has been hailed as one of National Public Radio’s 50 Great Voices and “one of America’s coolest composers.” She founded Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble in 1978 to expand her groundbreaking exploration of the human voice. The second half of this concert will be part of a later program.
Listen also to bluegrass-rooted chamber music from fiddler Mark O’Connor, together with Maggie O’Connor, who is also a fiddler, and singer. This husband-and-wife team plays a duo version of “Appalachia Waltz” – from the chamber/folk album of the same name, in-studio.
