#5149, Voice and Lower Strings: Cello & Bass
Treble voices and low string instruments can be a wonderful combination. On this edition of New Sounds, you’ll get to hear a wide range of explorations in this field, with music from experimental artists of all kinds who fuse human voices with cello or the upright bass.
Although there are some electronic textures in Cole Davis and Channy Leaneagh’s “Miracle”, as well as Caroline Shaw and Andrew Yee’s “The Trees of Green-Wood” and “Moby Dick”, it’s the combination of layered cello and vocals that make these compositions shine. German-Turkish singer-songwriter Alev Lenz explores a similar concept in the new drone version of her song, “Mother Tongue”, with an ambient rework from English producer Jas Shaw.
Later, bassist Devra Hoff and vocalist Sharon Van Etten come together in “Go Your Way”, reinterpreting the classic Anne Briggs song with a bare arrangement, followed by “Silencio De Um Minuto” from Argentine singer Sofia Rei and Peruvian bass player Jorge Roeder. A listening experience that starts with electronically fortified sounds ends with a raw, stripped-down performance from Nancy King and Glen Moore, taking you back to Town Hall in 1992 where they debuted their eccentric jazz numbers, “Little Bronco”, “Your Love”, and “Man in the Oven”. - Sırma Munyar
