The British post-punk band called The The were always built around the singer and songwriter Matt Johnson. In their heyday in the 1980's, they made a string of idiosyncratic, often cinematic albums, and eventually, Matt Johnson drifted away from rock altogether and focused on writing soundtracks for documentaries and art installations. A few years back, a 30^th anniversary version of their popular album Soul Mining was released. That was the album that included this song, “Uncertain Smile.” - although not in this version. (The audio for this Gig Alert comes from a 2002 compilation album of singles, 45RPM.)

The The are together for the 2018 Comeback Special Tour, with no samplers, click-tracks, sequencers or synthesizers. Matt Johnson and his tourmates distill the essence and maintain the soul of The The's back-catalogue tonight at the Beacon Theatre.
