Climate Protests Continue, Occupy Wall Street Style

On the heels of Sunday's peaceful march for climate change, activists staged a sit-in near Wall Street Monday, blocking traffic on Broadway all afternoon.

Surrounding the Wall Street Bull, protesters sang songs written for the occasion, and waved banners that read "Stop Climate Chaos."

Bernice McCale came down from Rivington, New York, for the protest, known as "Flood Wall Street." She said corporations need to be held accountable for the fossil fuel industry's impact on the environment. "Money is the bottom line and the billionaires are able to just run the show," siad McCale. "And people have got to say 'nope that's not how it's going to go,' and if we don't do that, we're in real trouble."

This march had an Occupy Wall Street edge, but there were far fewer confrontations with the police — a sharp contrast from the Bloomberg-era protests, which were marked by widespread arrests. One activist, Amanda Starbuck, said this may be what protest in the de Blasio-era is like. "Perhaps this is a sign of the elected officials of New York being more in step with the popular opinion of the people of New York."

Protesters continued blocking the street well after the closing bell on Wall Street Monday.

More protests are planned at the United Nations later this week.
