A Field Guide to NYC Subway Cars

WNYC News | Jul 6, 2015

The MTA runs different kinds of subway cars, of varying ages and features. Identifying the kind of car you're on can be fun, and can help spot the cars more prone to "hot car" air-conditioner breakdowns.

Subway car fleet info from the MTA July 2014 Capital Program Oversight Committee Meeting report (p. 26) and MTA September 2014 Transit & Bus Committee Meeting minutes (p. 28). Data on "hot cars" obtained by The New York World from the MTA through an open records request under New York's Freedom of Information Law. Additional research by Harry Stevens / The New York World and Louise Ma / WNYC.
