Gig Alert: Yasiin Bey (f.k.a. Mos Def) at the Apollo Theater

The rapper known as Yasiin Bey became famous under his original stage name, Mos Def, just before the turn of the century. He was a leader of rap’s socially conscious movement, worked with Kanye West, did a program with a full orchestra, and was detained in South Africa for traveling on a world passport instead of an American one. While there, Yasiin Bey announced his retirement. Tonight and tomorrow, he returns home with his farewell tour to the Apollo Theater.

(Note: the concert tonight was billed as his final NY show, although now a second final NY show has been added tomorrow as Yasiin Bey & Friends.)
