The Boston singer/songwriter Juliana Hatfield once said that she took up smoking, in hopes that the cigarettes would roughen up her voice. Well that didn’t work, but it was a rare misstep for this musician whose works range from stomping rock to more acoustic, folk-tinged songs. And Hatfield’s voice, still clear, makes for compelling listening, especially when she’s singing about things like our divided country – as in  "Impossible Song". Her latest album, Weird, is an album about disconnection and discomfort. Juliana Hatfield plays Friday night, June 28, at Monty Hall in Jersey City.
