After more than 30 years in the House, New York Congressman Eliot Engel has lost the Democratic primary.
It's a major shakeup for the Democratic Party establishment: Engel has represented parts of the Bronx and Westchester County since 1989, and chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee. But after a hotly contested primary, the Associated Press called the race for former middle school principal Jamaal Bowman, who had won 55% of the ballots counted so far.
This contest laid bare the ideological split that divides the Democratic Party. Engel was backed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as well as the Congressional Black Caucus, while Bowman, a political newcomer, won the backing of high-profile progressives like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. With no Republican opponent, Bowman is expected to win in the seat in November.
