That Was A Hit?!? Herman's Hermits Edition

Detail from LP release of "The Famous Herman's Hermits"

By any pop music measurement, 1965 was long on incredible No. 1 hits. The Rolling Stones released "Satisfaction" and The Beatles released "Yesterday." The Byrds topped the charts with Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and the Righteous Brothers got all swoony with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling."

And then there were Herman's Hermits.

Led by singer Peter Noone, these light weapons of the British Invasion scored a No. 1 with "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" in May 1965, then followed it with the even more unlikely "I'm Henery VIII, I Am."

In a conversation with Soundcheck host John Schaefer, chart analyst Chris Molanphy helps explain how Herman's Hermits -- a band more popular in America than their native England -- scored two "number ones" during a truly competitive year for pop.
