This Is What's Under the Hats of the Newest NYPD Officers

The NYPD graduation ceremony for 822 new officers on July 2, 2015.

The latest class of NYPD cadets, the first to go through the new NYPD training process, graduated today at Madison Square Garden. Unlike previous classes, the 822 officers will be sent across the city to practice so-called neighborhood policing. They'll immerse themselves in neighborhoods, getting to know the people in the communities they serve.

Before Thursday's ceremony, behind the scenes, they took off their hats and showed WNYC what they kept inside and plan to wear while on patrol.

Officer Tania Palacios keeps a photo of her 4-year-old daughter in her hat. 'I keep her close while I'm on patrol,' Palacios said.

Officer Alicia Matthias keeps a prayer for her grandmother, who died two years ago, under her hat.

Officer Gene Coughlin keep a prayer from St. Joseph that his instructor gave him under his hat.

Officer Triolo Kenneth keeps this card of his cousin under his hat. Kenneth says his cousin was his inspiration for joining the force.
