The latest class of NYPD cadets, the first to go through the new NYPD training process, graduated today at Madison Square Garden. Unlike previous classes, the 822 officers will be sent across the city to practice so-called neighborhood policing. They'll immerse themselves in neighborhoods, getting to know the people in the communities they serve.

Before Thursday's ceremony, behind the scenes, they took off their hats and showed WNYC what they kept inside and plan to wear while on patrol.

Officer Tania Palacios keeps a photo of her 4-year-old daughter in her hat. "I keep her close while I'm on patrol," Palacios said. As well as a few prayers to keep her safe.
