Tune in Thursday, June 15 at 8 p.m. on WNYC to hear the announcement of this year's winner(s).
The Lehrer Prize recognizes a standout idea, individual, or organization that has contributed meaningfully to improving the quality of life in New York City and the surrounding region. Community well-being is a phrase drawn from the public health arena that takes into account the combination of social, economic, environmental, cultural, and political conditions that affect people in a particular community.
This year's theme: People and organizations who work in and around schools making an impact on the social and emotional well-being of the children in our area.
Meet the winners:
- Unyque Rencher, a paraprofessional teacher at PS 372, The Children’s School in Brooklyn.
- New Era Creative Space and its director Ridvan Idara Foxhall, for their community- and creativity-centered social and emotional youth programming based in Peekskill, NY.
- Hunter's World and its director and founder Tracy Reinholt, for their efforts to develop a peer-to-peer support network for teens in New Jersey.
About the Lehrer Prize:
The award is named after WNYC’s Peabody Award-winning host Brian Lehrer, whose daily call-in show aims to build community by bringing listeners together with elected officials, community leaders, policy-makers, journalists, and each other to convene conversations about the issues affecting our city, our nation, and our lives. Founded to commemorate Brian Lehrer’s 30th anniversary on-air at WNYC, The Lehrer Prize recognizes a standout idea, person, group, or effort that has contributed meaningfully to life in New York City and the surrounding areas over the past year. Each honoree receives $2,500 to continue their organization's outstanding work.
Listen to the awarding of last year's Lehrer Prize, which honored the "vaccine heroes" who helped expand community access to COVID-19 immunizations.
