I have lived on Staten Island for 32 years and it still surprises and delights me. I was on the shoreline just below the Alice Austen House on Staten Island's east shore one foggy morning in early December when I saw this freighter emerging out of the mist as it cleared the Verrazano Bridge. I was struck by the timelessness and mystery of the image and was thrilled that I was able to capture it on my phone.
David Alejandro Goffan
This was taken in Nanuet, NY. I think it was neat that through the concrete, something was growing and thriving.

The Long Meadow, Prospect Park, Dec. 10, 2013. (iPhone Panorama)
I love The Long Meadow in any weather. The inevitable response by anyone visiting for the first time, "I can't believe I'm in Brooklyn".

very surreal

I took this picture in Waldwick, NJ. I DON'T like it! I am not a huge fan of winter. However, I will admit it is a pretty scene, best appreciated from a warm environment!

This was from one of my lunch time mountain bike rides at Kittatinny Valley State Park, in New Jersey during the fall. I have an hour lunch and I work with riding distance of the park, so I got out during peak foliage for some riding on the rail trail, which brought me to the XC trails.

This picture was taken looking up a cluster of Giant Sequoias trees.
It was taken in Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park on September 20, 2013.
I was trying to capture the how tall and beautiful these trees were.
I liked the different color leaves floating in the sky. It gives me a feeling of tranquility.

The Harlem Meer, in the north-east corner of Central Park. For a bit of exercise, I walk the circumference of the park, and this was taken on a particularly lovely late morning in September of 2013.

Roofing crew replacing Sandy-damaged roof on historic Grace Church Van Vorst in downtown Jersey City. Taken down to the original 1847 wooden roof deck.
The sky was so pretty this day against the contrast of the brownstone Church.

Where: Park Ranger Office at Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park.
Why Special: I was working off-site on the last full day that our summer high school interns, the Great Falls Youth Corps, worked before going back to school. This is what I found on my computer screen when I returned to the office the next day....gratitude post-it notes. I was moved, and this was truly One of the best gifts I have ever been given. With all the terrific work that they did/do for us particularly in the area of visitor services, it is we who can't thank them enough.

Rooftop party in upper Manhattan last summer for our friend Anitra the cat whisperer. Beautiful warm. clear night.
Aaron Burns
FDNY firefighter doing a saw cutting drill near the World Trade Center.
Taken at the "Ten House" FDNY ladder 10 Engine 10. Across the street from the wtc.
I took this while we were doing a drill to get some action shots. Hard to do at a real fire.

I took this photo on the A Subway on Halloween this year- I just had to try to capture this fleeting, surreal image- the everyday, workaday stress in the body and hand positions, contrasting with the rooster head, accented by the Magritte poster in the background.
Rob Lenihan
I took this photo of a bulldog who was sitting in the window of an electronics store in Bay Ridge. He seemed like he really wanted to go out into the world.
Yair Bitton
This photo was taken in Wurtsboro, Upstate NY. My fiance and I would always go up to visit her folks but walking down this path (with our pups) was a first. There were so many amazing discoveries, including this tree that seems to be reaching to the water for a drink! I have never seen a tree in such a way. The stillness of the water/ice and the gloomy day made the shot perfect!

In January of 2013, my fiance, our dog and I hit the road from LA to NYC in order to move back. On the first day of our trip we stopped at the Grand Canyon (where I proposed to her surprise). On the second/third days we were in New Mexico where this photo was taking right outside the petrified forest. I love road trips and the open road pictured in this photo is heaven as it seems to stretch on until it meets the sky!

The Gowanus Canal is one of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States. The sight of life existing in such an environment amazed me. There was also a parallel happening in my life at the moment I took the photo. The beauty that life and love can continue after the well has been poisoned was overwhelming.
