The Great Studio 360 Doodle Dare

Inspired by vintage doodle books, our challenge gives you a fragment of a drawing to complete any way you’d like. Alison Bechdel, the noted cartoonist and winner of the MacArthur Fellowship (a.k.a. the genius grant), provided this doodle as a starting point; the rest is up to you.

UPDATE 11/22: Carolita Johnson is the winner of our challenge!
See the winning submission and the runners up. Thanks to everyone who shared their work with us!

A very nasty dream is what is seen here. Alison's character is on a chair in a whirlpool surrounded by sharks and hanging on to the chair.
I often draw my dreams/nightmare, and this was a version of one.

Athena is 9 years old. She loves drawing food, and she loves public radio. She imagined a tiny person escaping the clutches of a hungry guy, with a similar miniature person behind her trying to escape the cup of soft drink he's attached to. Mickey D's was not a sponsor of this art!

The pose of the sketch reminded me of the internet meme of Scarlett Johansson falling down, and one of my favorite iterations of THAT involved her on a flying piece of pizza... So, pizza in spaaaace... It takes practice to surf it properly.

The first impression I had of Alison's drawing was that the young woman was trying to climb out of a hole. Then I thought, "Well, if that's my first impression, it'll be EVERYONE'S first impression." So I dug deeper, and found that, by turing the drawing a bit, I could change the impression from one that she is pulling herself up, to one that she is PUSHING something else up and away from herself -- or perhaps propping whatever it was up. The rest was obvious.

Her facial expression made me think she was trying to escape something, so I decided she was escaping from her wedding. With special thanks to Ed Emberley for his Make a World drawing book, which I've had since I was 6 years old (I'm now 43), and which I consulted for how to draw the church and groom.

I drew something I hoped would make Alison Bechdel chuckle.

Got inspired by pictures of retro female wrestlers, also some Hernandez brothers influence as well.

As a long time fan of Alison Bechdel's work, it was great to see she was part of this drawing contest!
This drawing was vaguely inspired by the art work in the Aeon Fluxx series,,, from back in the day! :)

This is just a colored in doodle of my previous doodle entry, about that day my dog rolled off a cliff in Spain. For the happy ending, see the previous entry. I just felt like making the girl look more like me (dark hair, latina-ish, in my favorite clothes of that time.)

The belittling situation that so many of us encounter when we have to admit our inabilities to survive without borrowing against our children's future.

Struggle of the single female in today's economy trying not to be devoured.

The style of drawing is deliberately contrasted between the bold strokes of the millionaire and the detailed complications of her world.

He can't see her and nor does the viewer right away.

Do you ever go grocery shopping and the one thing you really need is on the top shelf, far away from your reach? Sometimes the only way to get what you need is to climb that mountain and reach for the sky!

The figure has a look of shock on her face - what's more surprising than your dad wearing lingerie? well perhaps not these days......

In the distant future, a heroine attempts to escape the grasp of an underwater leviathan, gasping for oxygen and reaching toward the surface, her eminent doom in her wake.
