New York Yankee Baseball cap
I am always amazed when I travel abroad and see local natives, especially teenagers, wearing the New York Yankee cap, not only as a fashion item. In America it is a symbol that represents all New Yorkers in sports whether they are Yankee fans or not. It is also one of the most hated symbols in America for non Yankee fans. That symbol draws more love or hate from all baseball fans.

Knishes
This represents the big waves of Eastern Immigration at the end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th in New York City. Immigrants brought their food culture with them and it became at some point around the 20s' a staple of snack food you could find around NY. To this day, this simbolizes a big part of the food culture brought to this city. To my knowledge, they can only be found around NY but I might be wrong.

The Pushcart
The pushcart has provided NYC with a taste of the world for many decades. It is a ubiquitous symbol of salvation for the highly mobile society in NYC as well as providing sustenance to folks in places where they can't always find food or drink. The pushcart can be found all over NYC in many shapes and sizes selling a variety of wares.
There are many pictures that can be found doing a GOOGLE image search: pushcarts in NYC: http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1024&bih=608&q=pushcarts+in+nyc&gbv=2&oq=pushcarts+in+nyc&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=561l4125l0l4350l16l14l0l8l8l0l419l1589l0.2.3.0.1l6l0&safe=active
