The fishbowl effect of the panorama shot augments the real fishbowl of the piazza. Twice a year all the cafes surrounding it are converted into a horsetrack for 'Il Palio di Siena'. The bareback race is a local event, not a tourist attraction. People hang out of their windows or if they are feeling adventurous, standing behind the flimsy race baricade where riders and horses might topple onto them. The rest of the year its a relaxed area to take in the sun and people watch from the cafes.
