Community Advisory Board
New York Public Radio's Community Advisory Board (CAB)
___________
Welcome to the New York Public Radio Community Advisory Board!
We are a volunteer-powered independent body of radio lovers supporting the future of public radio in New York.
Our mission: we connect communities to content, listen to those who listen, and advise NYPR on what the listenership is thinking and feeling.
Our goal: to improve the listener experience, and to ensure that station content and strategy are meeting the specialized educational, coverage, and cultural needs of the communities it serves.
Our reach is vast: covering a listening area stretching from the Hudson Valley to Delaware Bay, inclusive of all Five Boroughs, much of Long Island, Rockland & Westchester Counties, and the entire state of New Jersey.
We serve all of New York Public Radio: our remit encompasses all areas of station programming and content, including WNYC, WQXR, NJPR, Gothamist, WNYC Studios, and the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space.
The CAB, as mandated by federal law, exists to provide specific value-added feedback to senior leadership and the NYPR Board of Trustees. We facilitate public fora with the listening public six times per fiscal year, and convey our findings and recommendations to the Board of Trustees. We further our mission by partnering with the station in all areas of community outreach and engagement. We are both a proxy for the listenership, and a conduit to the listening area as a whole.
We are listener volunteers serving for terms of up to six years, representing a diverse group of lifestyles, demographics, communities, boroughs, backgrounds, ages, affinities, and professions. We are equal parts ambassadors, advisors, and strategic partners for the station.
The CAB deliberates independently of station management and New York Public Radio's Board of Trustees, determining its own agenda, recruiting its own members, and electing its own leadership. Our role is strictly advisory. As such, we are not authorized to exercise any control over WNYC and WQXR's daily management or operations.
The CAB, as required by federal law, reviews the programming goals established by the station, the service provided by WNYC and WQXR, and the significant policy decisions rendered by the station, and assesses whether the programming and other policies of the station are meeting the specialized educational and cultural needs of the communities served by the station. The CAB deliberates independently of station management and New York Public Radio's Board of Trustees, determining its own agenda and electing its own leadership. The CAB is an advisory body only, and is not authorized to exercise any control over WNYC and WQXR's daily management or operations. The CAB conveys its findings and recommendations based on public input to the Board of Trustees.
