David Moore

Composer

At 27, composer and multi-instrumentalist David Moore has quickly established himself as a strong presence in New York City's creative music community. In 2006, after receiving his Bachelor of Music from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Moore founded the ensemble Bing and Ruth, whose current membership includes clarinets, voices, cellos, basses, piano, trumpet, and lap steel. The band keeps an active performance schedule and has recorded three albums, City Lake (in 2010), Kentile Floors (in 2007), and Bing and Ruth (in 2006). Notable performances include multiple shows for the Wordless Music Series, an appearance at the WFMU festival, two appearances for the Stochastic Brooklyn series, and a live studio recording for WFMU. In 2009 Moore was awarded the MATA Festival Commission and the MATA Film Commission, both awards culminating with a new multimedia piece premiered by Bing and Ruth at the 2009 MATA Festival in New York City.

In addition to his national and international touring schedule, Moore performs regularly at many of New York's venues for new music and the avant-garde, including Le Poisson Rouge, the Stone, the Knitting Factory, the Tank, Barbés, Issue Project Room, Zebulon, and the Brooklyn Lyceum. He is also known for his performances in spaces not normally associated with live music. He has given concerts in an abandoned meat locker, in a chicken coop, in a vacant apartment, on a beach, and on a warehouse rooftop.  Since relocating from Kansas in 2004, Moore has released five albums of original work. Along with the three from Bing and Ruth, he has two records documenting his compositions for solo piano, Neighborhood Shifts (in 2007) and Book of Days (in 2005).

Moore is a prolific composer for film, theater, and installation, and he has appeared as both performer and composer on releases by a diverse roster of record labels including Velour, Palmetto, Brownswood, Because Music, and Kemado. He has been featured in the New York Times, Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, La Blogotheque, Flavorpill, Music Slut, the Guardian, Downbeat, Jazzwise, and the New York Post and has appeared on NPR, WNYC, and WFMU. He also founded and runs the independent vinyl label Happy Talk and was recently the subject of a Take-Away Show from highly acclaimed music filmmaker Vincent Moon. Besides his work as a composer and a pianist, Moore is an accomplished old-time and bluegrass banjo player, a producer, and a member of alt-country punk outfit Langhorne Slim.
