Hear an hour of New Sounds based on found sounds and field recordings. Listen to Berlin-based artist Melanie Velarde built floating, electronic layers around field recordings from her surroundings, from her solo release, Parcel. Then, hear music by Anenon, the LA-based electronic musician, sax player and composer whose work uses field recordings made on location in Tuscany. There’s also music by the Bralizian-born New York-based jazz pianist, Henrique Eisenmann, who uses chords from the Charles Ives song “Serenity,” and overlaid them with the recording of a young West African girl singing.
Also, sample liberally from the Bang on a Can commissioning project, Field Recordings. Listen to music by Jace Clayton (aka DJ Rupture), Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Bryce Dessner all written for the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Each composer used a piece of recorded sound, something old or new, and responded with their own music, in dialogue with what they found. Interestingly, Jace Clayton used re-imagined fragments of the first song was that each of the All-Stars memorized as young children, Thorvaldsdottir used sound from a walk through lava fields of her native Iceland, and Dessner used a reading of Charles Olson's poem, “Maximus to Gloucester, Letter 27 [withheld].”
Listen to music from Yann Tiersen’s record, EUSA, which is the Breton name for the island of Ushant, which includes field recordings of birds along with highly processed piano. Plus, hear sample-based chamber music by Norwegian record producer and composer, Erik Honoré, built around sampled and found sound, and featuring vocalist Sidsel Endresen.
