#4259, New Releases, July 2019

Martin Hayes with Brooklyn Rider

It’s the most wonderful time of the month! Now is the time for newly-released music, or music that is coming later this summer. There’s cosmic psych-jazz from The Quiet Temple, music from the Irish fiddler Martin Hayes with string quartet Brooklyn Rider, and new music for modified 12-string guitar from David Garland and Kenji Garland.

First, music from the great South African singer, songwriter, bandleader, Johnny Clegg, who put together mixed-race bands in the face of apartheid, sang in both English and Zulu, and performed to both black and white audiences in defiance of apartheid-era segregation laws. Then, listen to music from The Quiet Temple, which looks to both the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane, and the Velvet Underground as musical influences, as well as Krautrock.

Hear recent work from composer, multi-instrumentalist, and radio host David Garland and Kenji Garland, for modified 12 string guitar and modular synthesizer. The acoustic 12-string guitar was fitted with electronics that provoke its strings to vibrate and sustain, and then was connected to modular synthesizer so that the two instruments become, in effect, one instrument played by two people. The music comes from a series of pieces intended to provide sonic solace for the late Anne Garland, “Vulneraries”, (all proceeds from which go to National Nurses United, the largest labor union and progressive professional association of registered nurses in the United States.)

Listen to new music from British-born, NYC-based composer Jane Antonia Cornish, for string orchestra, piano, and electronics from her brand-new record, Seascapes, along with new music from the Sirius Quartet. Plus, listen to music from the collaboration between string quartet Brooklyn Rider, and Irish fiddler Martin Hayes which explores what a string quartet could bring to traditional Irish music.
