#4620, Ingram Marshall Birthday Tribute

Composer Ingram Marshall

Celebrate American composer Ingram Marshall with a few pieces that might give a range of his sound world. Since the mid-1970’s, when he developed “live electronic” pieces, he has been a pioneer in electronic music delay, found sound, tape collage, electronically altered sounds, and has also been under the influence of Indonesian gamelan music, which he studied, and sometimes incorporates in his work (IngramMarshall.net.) May 10 marks his birthday; he turned 80 years old in 2022.

Listen to a dark and evocative piece, from Marshall’s time in the San Francisco Bay area, which he says is NOT a portrait of San Francisco Bay, his "Fog Tropes" for brass sextet and ambient sounds on tape, which was also used in the film, Shutter Island. Then, hear music using electronically processed archival field recordings of professional mourners from Southeastern Europe, in “Hidden Voices,” featuring soprano Cheryl Bensman-Rowe.

Plus, hear the electronic work “Alcatraz,” based off of field recordings from both the San Francisco bay and from within the walls of the prison itself, and  written to accompany a multimedia installation done with the photographer Jim Bengston. There’s also a work based on Beethoven’s “Waldstein” piano sonata, and composed for gamelan, and more. – Caryn Havlik
