It’s the end of January, and time to sample some of the new entries into the New Sounds library. Also, Jan. 31st is Philip Glass’ birthday. Hear Third Coast Percussion’s new arrangements of Philip Glass’ work Aguas da Amazonia, scored for a collection of custom instruments, including a glass marimba, a red oak marimba, a PVC bass instrument, and more.
Then, listen to flute-like trumpet playing from Ann Arbor-based composer, trumpeter, improviser, electronicist and educator Mark Kirschenmann. It’s from the record, Tonics: Seven Melodies for Trumpet With Bamboo Mouthpipe. There’s also new work from folk singer Sam Amidon; chamber-jazz by Vega Trails; and Asa Horvitz and friends render songs of grief written by an AI, with a “weird kind of poetry to it” (-Schaefer).
