Ecuadorean Man Dies After Being Attacked in Alleged Bias Crime

An Ecuadorean man who was attacked in an alleged hate crime in Brooklyn has died after being declared brain-dead Tuesday. Family members say Jose Sucuzhanay died at Elmhurst hospital on Friday as his mother was traveling from Ecuador to see him. Police say three men attacked the 31-year-old real estate broker as he walked arm-in-arm with his brother in Bushwick in the early morning hours of December 7th. Witnesses say the assailants shouted anti-gay and anti-Latino slurs as they smashed a beer bottle over Sucuzhanay's head and struck him with an aluminum baseball bat. His brother Romel managed to get away and call police.
