Queens Company Recalls Possible Tainted Meat

A New York City company is recalling more than a quarter million pounds of meat and poultry because it might be contaminated with Listeria bacteria.

The US Department of Agriculture says the recall includes several different brands of fresh and frozen products made by Gourmet Boutique of Queens. They include sandwiches sold under the company's name, some types of chicken salad, and several frozen wraps and burritos sold under the names Jan's and Archer Farms.

The USDA says the problem was discovered through sampling by federal food safety inspectors and Florida agriculture officials. There have been no reports of illness so far, but the bacteria can potentially cause Listeriosis, which can give people a high fever, headache and nausea. People with depressed immune systems could also suffer a fatal infection.

Gourmet Boutique says it's made changes at its plants in an effort to prevent similar problems in the future.
