New York, NY —
Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer unveiled a bill today to legalize gay marriage in New York prompting Republican Senate Leader Joseph Bruno to immediately declare his opposition to the measure. Bruno says Spitzer has his priorities wrong.
He says, given the fatal shooting of a state trooper this week, Spitzer should be worried more about bringing back the death penalty for those who kill police officers. Bruno's opposition blocks the measure from moving ahead in the state legislature for now.
Spitzer says he wanted to introduce the legislation anyway, as a statement of a principle he believes in.
