Brooklyn Fixture Closes for Good

A Brooklyn skating rink, open for more than 60 years, will close its doors today. Empire Roller Skating Center held its last skating sessions this weekend.

REPORTER: Skaters from all over waited in long lines to say goodbye to the rink that has been called the birthplace of roller disco. Leona Clayton has been skating at Empire for 30 years and says the closing of the rink is traumatic.

CLAYTON: It is really just a killer because now there's no where else to skate in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens - this is a landmark -and it’s so therapeutic. You have people in here like 70 years old skating, you know – it’s like they’re taking away a dream.

REPORTER: The land occupied by Empire Roller Skating Center in Crown Heights is expected to be used as storage facility.
