NYPD Commander Reassigned

A New York Police Department crime lab commander has been transferred because he allegedly didn't report mistakes. Deputy Chief Dennis McCarthy failed to report that 2 of his civilian lab technicians had mistakenly found drugs in samples that were actually clean.

REPORTER: The samples were part of internal quality control done regularly by the lab. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says a committee of top brass and academics verified the technicians' work on other criminal cases.

BROWNE: All of the cases they handled were reviewed again to go back and make sure they didn't have any impact on actual cases. And there was none found.

REPORTER: NYPD officials transferred McCarthy because they say he didn't tell a national accreditation board about the flubbed internal quality control test 5 years ago.
