New York, NY —
Yonkers says it's closing the book on the federal desegregation case that put the city in an unwanted spotlight 27 years ago.
Mayor Phil Amicone says the city has completed its obligations under a federal court order, when it built the last of 600 units of affordable housing meant to help desegregate the city, and its school system. If a federal judge agrees, it will be the end of what Amicone calls "the most turbulent and divisive chapter" in the history of Yonkers.
The head of the local chapter of the NAACP says Yonkers is now integrated but says it's just too bad it had to be forced.
