City’s Crackdown on Cigarettes is Working

A crackdown on stores that sell cigarettes to kids under 18 has been a success. Mayor Bloomberg and the city's consumer affairs commissioner say 89% of New York stores do not sell cigarettes to kids.

REPORTER: When the program started in 1998, compliance was at 52%. Fouad Mayo, a 6th grader at IS 61 in Queens, where Bloomberg made the announcement, says he doesn't smoke but has friends who do.

MAYO: Kids who smoke is not good because they have a shorter time not to live. Like people that don't smoke they live for longer.

REPORTER: The health department says 90% of high-school students in the city do not smoke.
