New York, NY —
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked Mayor Bloomberg if some of the city's police officers could be deployed with UN peacekeeping missions.
Recruiting international police for the UN's 16 peacekeeping missions around the globe has been historically challenging. And a UN spokeswoman says getting police to join peacekeeping operations is one of the UN's high priorities. Bloomberg left yesterday's meeting with the Secretary-General without speaking to the press. And his office had no comment.
New York City has recently fallen short of its police recruiting goals and is unlikely to have any officers to spare for international peacekeeping. Also at the meeting was Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. The 3 discussed ways to bring the main UN building in line with fire codes. The 39-story glass-and-steel building has not seen a major overhaul since it was built 54 years ago.
