City Rolls Out New Science Curriculum

New York City is rolling out a new science curriculum for its elementary and middle grades. Principals will get to choose from 3 different textbook publishers, starting next fall, as part of an effort by the city and state to put more emphasis on science.

REPORTER: Parent leader Zakiyah Ansari, of the Brooklyn Education Collaborative, says she's glad all schools will benefit from the new curriculum.

ANSARI: Unfortunately for a long time our children haven't even had a choice of some, you know, having books that are not up to date so much less having a science book to have a choice of taking 3 different books as far as the principal is concerned is a big win for children in neighborhoods where I live like Brownsville and East New York which historically have been failing schools.

REPORTER: The city is investing 60 million dollars in the new curriculum over the next two years, which includes professional development as well as more testing and assessments.
