A new rail security pilot program takes effect today in New Jersey. WNYC's Julie Walker has more.
PATH train commuters at the Jersey City Exchange Place station now have to go through airport like security checks. Including X-ray baggage machines and walk-through metal detectors. But, Officials say passengers will not be required to empty their pockets or take off their shoes. The program is part of the Department of Homeland Security's overall plan to improve nationwide rail safety.
A Port Authority spokesman said the screening will be random and will add about a minute to the normal commute. The pilot program will last through march first. for WNYC I'm Julie Walker.
