New York, NY —
City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says there are bound to be a few bumps when the new school day begins on Monday. The change was agreed to in the new teachers contract and it provides an extra 37 and a half minutes of class, four days a week for struggling students.
REPORTER: Klein acknowledged parents and principals have logistical concerns about keeping some students later than others.
KLEIN: I'm talking about providing struggling learners in the city of NY itnensive small group instruction 150 minutes a week and the amount of dislocation, which I don't think will be overwhelming, the amount of dislocation pales in comparison to the benefit.
REPORTER: The extra classes will have no more than 10 students each. Some 300 thousand students are mandated to attend the classes plus another 50 thousand who are going voluntarily.
