Narcotics Commissioner Harry J. Anslinger announces a series of raids in the nation's big cities aimed at crippling the narcotics traffic in New York on Jan. 4, 1958.

Alexandra Chasin, associate professor of literary studies at the New School, joins us to discuss her new book Assassin of Youth: A Kaleidoscopic History of Harry J. Anslinger’s War on Drugs. She tells the story Harry Anslinger, the first Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Anslinger stayed with the bureau from its establishment in 1930 until his retirement in 1962. Chasin connects how Anslinger's policies shaped how we think about drugs today.
