For years, Joseph Brady was well-known in the halls of the New York State Capitol. As legislative director for the influential state Assemblyman Peter Abbate, Jr., Brady was the first stop for lawmakers and lobbyists looking for help pushing bills through the Governmental Employees Committee, which is chaired by Abbate.
Then, after Brady was arrested on Saturday, Oct. 24 for allegedly sexually abusing an 18-year-old woman, the Albany Times-Union revealed he was a co-founder of a local chapter of the East Coast Syndicate—a notorious and violent biker gang that law enforcement has linked to fistfights and suspected of involvement in the unsolved murder of a rival gang member.
As Times-Union managing editor Brendan Lyons told WNYC's Sean Carlson, the news shocked Brady's longtime colleagues in the legislature.
"They dealt with him, he was an affable guy, very attentive, responsive," Lyons said. "They never would have guessed he had this double life."
