Americans are bracing themselves for a long delay between Election Day and getting the results from contested races.
New Jersey Rep. Andy Kim can sympathize The Democrat unseated incumbent Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur, in 2018, but had to wait nine days for every last vote to be counted.
Kim says the wait was nerve-wracking.
"I learned a lot about just making sure there is transparency in the process and that we have trust in those who are conducting the counting, so I’m hoping we can make sure we have that kind of clarity this time around too," Kim said.
County election workers will first count all mail-in ballots, and then count the provisional ballots cast at polling places. The majority of ballots in New Jersey — 3.5 million of them — have already arrived. That gives Gov. Phil Murphy confidence New Jersey will have results on Election Night.
"The fact that we have 90% of the 2016 vote total already in the tank, and secondly, that the counting began a week ago Saturday, I believe we’re going to know a fair amount tomorrow night," Murphy said.
