Construction Suicide Prevention Week shines light on high suicide rate among construction workers

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. It’s a time to raise awareness about the topic, and to ensure that people get the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and find help if they need. And September 4th-8th is specifically designated Construction Suicide Prevention Week. It's meant to bring attention and provide resources for construction companies and workers. The federal government says the suicide rate for men working in the construction industry is four times higher than the general population.

Elizabeth Crowley is the president and CEO of the Building Trades Employers Association. She joined WNYC's Sean Carlson to discuss the programs and mental health resources available for construction workers.

If someone you know exhibits warning signs of suicide: do not leave the person alone; remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt. Call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org, take the person to an emergency room, or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.
