Imagine walking out of Prospect Park into a massive car-free pedestrian plaza? That’s exactly what the city’s Department of Transportation is considering. WNYC’s Stephen Nessen reports on new plans to improve Grand Army Plaza.

One idea the city is considering is getting rid of all vehicles from the notoriously traffic choked plaza. It’s also thinking about ways to connect a car-free Grand Army Plaza to permanent Open Streets on nearby Vanderbilt and Underhill Avenues.

A top DOT official tells WNYC it’s time to go beyond citizens moving barricades each week to create car-free streets. He's looking for a more permanent solution.

The agency hopes to tap into $900 million dollars Mayor Adams has set aside for traffic improvements.

DOT is currently soliciting feedback from the public on changes they’d like to see to Grand Army Plaza. And hopes to have firmer plans, by next year.
