Are the Democratic Socialists of America Truly On the Rise After Ocasio-Cortez Win?

Congressman Joe Crowley faces his first primary opponent in 14
 years, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's win was a shock to the political world. Now, the organization behind her upset Democratic primary victory over longtime Queens Congressman Joe Crowley hopes to use the boost to get behind other candidates. Ocasio-Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. The organization, which has been around since the 1970's,  had nearly 60 volunteers going door-to-door to get out the vote on her behalf.

Ben Max is the executive editor of Gotham Gazette. He told WNYC's All Things Considered host Jami Floyd that although the organization only has 30,000 members nationwide, the upset could give it the extra momentum it needs.

"They're not that large, they're not that powerful at this point, but certainly Ocasio-Cortez's win gives them a big boost," said Max.

Ocasio is one of two candidates the DSA endorsed this election cycle. The organization is also backing New York State Senate candidate Julia Salazar  in her Northern Brooklyn State Senate primary against Democratic incumbent Senator Martin Dilan.
