Dublin Guitar Quartet – Chimurenga (Weekly Music Roundup)

The Dublin Guitar Quartet has just released an album full of works by contemporary Irish composers – but that doesn’t mean the music sounds Irish. The below piece, written for the quartet by Dave Flynn, was inspired by the music of the resistance movement against British colonialism in what was once called Rhodesia and is now Zimbabwe. That music, built around the rhythm patterns of the native instrument known as the thumb piano, was called "Chimurenga," and that’s also the name of Dave Flynn’s piece.
